It was once said to me by a drunken sound guy "the best day of your life is wen you tell a producer NO" The fun part of producing is the yes part. Saying yes you can have what you want and Yes I want you to work with us. the dirty work is when you tell people no. no you cant get that green sceen, No we don't need your help, No you are no longer working on this project. This is when the real work begins.

Shutters Yelp Review

From time to time I place reviews of all the random places I eat. Call me a brave soul or just a man with an Iron Clad Stomach I look for the places less reviewed. The smaller Non-chainy places (Although check my review of Costco for a laugh). The following is a review from the Shutters restaurant on the Santa Monica Beach.

Started out as a peace full Bike down the Santa Monica Beach became a Mad dash to try to find a restroom and perhaps a meal.

Shutters didn't really look like the place for a couple of beach cruisers from the valley to use there restroom but I was at my breaking point. After parking the bike behind a Kayak, I found Coast, a cute little restaurant that looked like a cross between Williams and sonoma and a bar. Which actually was quite nice.

Seated right at the window, your about 3 feet under the sand. You get this voyeur feeling your spying on the people passing by. Which for some might be guilt free people watching.

Had the fish Tacos which where great but really small. and the Niçoise Ahi tuna Salad... not sure if it wasn't that good or maybe I'm used to salads that have lettuce in them. either way the tuna was good, the rest of the salad not so Good.

$25 Corkage fee! Ouch Id rather naw through the cork with my teeth then pay that price... My $9 bottle of "Sofia" (the only good cheap wine Coppola makes) stayed in my back back for latter.

So if you can make it here for sunset... or for a morning brunch, I'd say give it a try. other then that the Price at over $20 a plate for small portions isn't worth it if the view is nothing but a black night.

Takeing multirasking to a dangous but legal level. I surf the web, compose music, take pictures, and write this blog all wile putting a 56000 miles on my car in 20 months. My newest weapon in this battle is my LG blue tooth earpeice. Shure it ups my nerd score, but I own 5 hands free devices and its the only one where I can hear them and they can hear me. Unfourtuneatly I have to push it through my eardrum to get it to work.

Deja vu but diffrent...

I`ve been shooting for over 10 years. That fact was made present to me yesterday when I was shooting a set up for a music video, one that I had done four times before. But despite the deja vu, I was still trying new things. Of course shifting the tilt on a lens to the beat might not work. If the fear of failer prevents you from experimenting from trying new things then you can never grow.

If one painter can create art, what happens if two painters work together? Collaborative art is the most difficult and for me the most rewarding...taking an Idea from one person and making it better then they ever imagined themselves is when I feel I'm really doing my job. the best part is that your not alone and together you feel you can take on anything.

Seseme ginger marinaded Halibut summer salad

Halibut summer salad, originally uploaded by vincent pascoe.

No that will never work, though words never stopped me before. Halibut? in a salad? why not put it on the side? what about frying it? what about salmon? No I said, I already bought the halibut and needed to make a salad. I asked every old lady in Costco, the workers in Safeway, and made a few calls. No one thought it was possible, but I did it anyway. I wondered what they would have told me if I told them the truth was I wanted to put fish and fruit together in a salad...

2/3 pound fresh halibut fillet
Fresh ground pepper
1 tsp thyme
6 springs fresh dill
1/4 cup Olive oil
1 tbs of sesame seed oil
1/2 cup Safeway sesame ginger salad dressing

Salad spring mix from
Costco
1 cup fresh sliced strawberry
1 cup blueberry
1/2 a cucumber
Cranberry balsamic vinaigrette
1/2 cup candied wallnuts

serves 2

Mix olive oil and whole halibut fillet, pepper, Dill, thyme, and seseme dressing coat both sides and let sit in refrigerator for at least 15 min

mix strawberries, blue Berry's, cucumber, wallnuts and spring salad mix.

heat 1 tbs of Olive oil in pan
remove fish from marinade cook for 4 minutes each side
remove halibut from heat let sit 5 min then slice into pieces and put on top of salad.
add salad dressing to taste

I believe cooking can be very creative especially when everyone thinking what your doing is impossible...

oh wait how does it taste... well I give it 4 out of 5 stars a nice light summer salad the halibut a good complement to the salad.

less-paul

less-paul, originally uploaded by vincent pascoe.

I can not stress. that everyone should spend sometime with a band on tour. It was the most fun I've had on a shoot in a wile. Also the most hard work I've done since I didn't have a bed to my name...

watching old music videos with the band... and just talking about music and Life where my favorite things. to shoot a Banquet in LA to a larger Vegas stage, to a state fair out side stage performance. was a great experience.

at the end we Raided a Taco bell and our talent couldn't eat one of his burritos and gave it to us. as he walked out.. a girl with his name painted on her face walked in right past him. didn't recognize him at all. before we left we gave her and her friend his burrito and told them that they almost bumped right into him.

the last night I was acully looking forward to sleeping on the bus... only got about an hour and a half of sleep when I woke It hurt. dropped off in a daze we loaded my car and the bus took off... and then my car didn't start. me and the director where exhausted. Beaten and bruised from havening a 30 pound monkey on our backs. Bitten from all the bugs in the stream. Broken just from the mental strain of 3 cameras 4 lights 16 battery's and only 2 people to run it. We where trying to push my car up hill to pop the clutch and not getting it... here at 5:30 in the morning is where Im glad I have friends I can Call on at any time. I call Steve Forner and he goes through popping the Clutch with me just as his phone dies...We push the car through a 3 point turn and try it again down hill and we finally get it going... just great Icing on the cake for a hard shoot...

Faceing myself

Faceing myself, originally uploaded by vincent pascoe.

I'll wake you in the morning...the director says...right before I go to sleep..

I have a dream where driving down a bumpy dirt desert road... I get shaken and think its the director waking me.." I'm up! I'm up!" I yell/ I look around and don't see him ..I discover I'm not on the shaky tour bus instead alone in my room. yet the room is stil shaking. the walls bow back and forth.... I realize im in my first Earthquake..

5.8 on the Rickter scale... But everythings fine not a single picture fell from my wall... go to a post house that day and the power goes off... what can a bunch of editors do with out power.... "make me a Mohito" one girl says. as Firetrucks and ambulances can be herd in the background...

kicking it in the country

P7270191, originally uploaded by vincent pascoe.

Wandering around the Vegas old town one day playing and shooting and swiming in a river the next. Shooting campfire jam session was the most creative fun...I got a little break when the director took on a bet for a $1000 for the first person to climb the mountain across the way and wave back at us... and in a flash he ran over the stream...so I finally got a little break for an hour...too bad I had no cell phone service or internet...cause we where in the middle of the sequoria national forest (oh the director came back after seeing 2 rattlesnakes...)

P7260014

P7260014, originally uploaded by vincent pascoe.

the first half of the day I felt like I had sea legs... when ever I was off the bus..
I highly recommend to anyone to spend a few days on a tour bus... Nothing like wakeing up in another city.. talking to people about music and writeing, just having fun hanging. Stoping and raiding the local wall mart like pirates. But Vegas... very happy to spend sometimes in sin city. Buffet! Just try hitting the buffet more then twice in 12 hours... I dare you.. We went location scouting in old town Vegas... lots of fun but found nothing right..

where am I?

P7260001, originally uploaded by vincent pascoe.

I wake up its dark and have to use the restroom...
this is not a new sensation to me I have had
this happen before. being in a bunk bed 5 feet off the ground in a tour bus driving to Vegas that was a New one. and then I herd one of the scariest noises... the Road bumps the ones on the sides of the road to keep you awake... I start hearing that rubbing noise... except I'm no where close to being able to keep the driver awake... the bus lilts to the left. I push up on the ceiling of my little pre-made coffin so I don't fall out... I hear the faint sound of someone singing. which means I know the drivers awake. I also thought I heard something hitting the ground. "where's my cell phone" I wonder.... I look every where can't find it in the bunk... after lots of looking in a black bus with 10 people sleeping and several people snoring. I use my camera as a flash light I find it under a bed in an air vent...I don't know if thats cheese or not next to it I'm just happy I found my phone... I go to the living quarters and I swear living on a tour bus is like living like a pirate on a cruise ship (wow that seemed so much more cleaver where I was sleepy)...I open the window and see sunrise.

useing Hardwhere on the Red

REd Sensor, originally uploaded by vincent pascoe.

Is that the Red? asks a random customer at a
true value store on Ventura... "yes it is"
I reply back as the worker there is trying
to remove the last torx screw from the PL
mount...then in front of my eyes I see the
impossible... Metal of the screwdriver bent
and twisted like taffy and nothing from the
screw..."when you need this done?" asks the
worker... "about an hour ago" I say. we where
running late to the shoot and had to have the Nikon mount on to do the shoot. We where down to the last Screw holding the PL mount on ..SNAP

the second and last bit she had breaks off
into the screw. Funny I didn't swear more
when that happened... but the week of
shooting with kids kept my F-bomb count
low..."So I guess I need a Tap and Die Set" I reply as calmly as possible.
I call the owner of the camera and ask If I
can use a large power drill by one of the
most sensitive parts of his Baby... "It's
your insurance...go ahead" he says kind of
like " Go Ahead, your funeral!"...

the director had moved the car since it was
illegally parked. and was waiting... "great
lets go where late" says the director that
I've never worked with ... and wanted to
work with for a wile... I sadly told him we
where going to be even later...and that we needed
a drill.

"is that sweat?" my roommate asks pointing to
my drenched shirt. My hands clutched on to
the cordless drill dripping in sweat. the
director holding on to the camera right
below it."why Just give me a 435 and a mag
and will shoot this!" jokes the director." I try to explane that
you don't always have to perform a major
Gear surgery every time you shoot with the
red. I use my bisness card to cover up the
sensor to protect it from metal pieces. "lets
scrap this red thing and just shoot on HVX!" he screamed.
Determined to make this work I start up the
Drill. I figure we have wasted all this time if I chicken out just because a peice of gear is getting in the way of what I want to create. I lower the drill very slowly and just as I
make contact the bit flies out of the
screw... theres something that happens upon
relief, like that summer rain that finally breaks
the heat. my eyes relax and open. I am so
happy I don't have to drill a hole in the
camera!

Of course its not over with yet changing
over to Nikon had its own issues. but in the
end we got it working... so we could shoot
Red on a tour bus for 4 nights and 3
concerts...

crazy I am...

Cutting away offline edit

So spent today cutting with my roommate Steve the spec I directed. Here it is in its infancy. No Music, No Sound Design, No graphics and a Temp Voice over. long way to go, so realize its a work in progress. Learning lots, Communication, just cause the editor has the footage doesn't mean he can read your mind and put it together the way you have it in your head. And sometimes the footage isn't there to make the version thats in your head so get ready to make compromises. telling a story in 30sec is really hard. gona re-shoot the Close ups on camera.

What this is... and what this is not...

I am NOt normal, when I was much younger (like 9 years old) I thought what I wanted most out of life was money. I started street corner stand that sold Rocks in the middle of the desert which never got off the ground. Next a middle school Loan shark bissness that never made a profit. By 10 I had lost the stock market game and decided that my life goal had to change. I realized that what I really love to do is create. thats what this is manily about the fact that every day I'm creating something and wanted to share.

not everyday will be good. In fact somethings I crate will be aposoloutly horrible.

I may skip somedays, and somethings I wont be able to share.

Bloging is creative so somedays a review might be all thats up here...

This is personal not bissness

This is for those of you who ask, "what you up to?" and mean it.

I Can't spell and I can't drive... If you want to fix eether of thoughs go ahead, but don't expect them from me.
